Why Water Quality Is Important

The Water Quality Association’s “National Consumer Attitude Survey” found that almost half of American consumers are worried about contaminants in their water.

• 60% of adults believe the quality of their water affects their health.

• One in three believes their water supply is not as safe as it should be. Their top rated concerns are bacteria, proper purification, lead, chlorine, carcinogens and agricultural run-off.

• Only 29% of consumers have ever had their water tested*

• Use of home treatment systems reached an all time high with 38% of consumers using some treatment device. Consumer use of home treatment devices equals that of bottled water.

• 47% of respondents said they would be more likely to purchase a new home if it had a water treatment system.

• Ten percent of respondents said they planned to purchase a water filtration unit this year.

* we routinely test our customer’s water before we install a new system and at every service call.

What Is Reverse Osmosis?

The reverse osmosis process was developed in the late 1950's and is the latest major technology in water purification. It is considered to be one of the great achievements of our century. The most important reason to utilize reverse osmosis is its ability to remove a very wide spectrum of impurities from water at a minimal cost. With the exception of distillation, reverse osmosis is the only known process which can remove all of the following classification of impurities.

• Particulate matter
• Heavy metals
• Dissolved salts
• Bacteria
• Viruses
• Pyrogen
• Organic molecules

If you begin with a concentrated solution of salts and other impurities on one side of a semipermeable membrane and nothing on the other side, and then start applying water pressure, you will see the miracle of reverse osmosis. Pure water will start "oozing" from the surface of the membrane, leaving impurities behind.

Reverse Osmosis is also very effective in removing bacteria and viruses. To appreciate the fineness of the membrane, note that its pores measure about .0005 microns; (To give you a point of reference here, the smallest particle the eye can detect is about 40 microns and smallest bacteria are about 1 micron.)

How Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Works

The application of reverse osmosis works to physically remove dissolved contaminates by passing water under pressure through a special membrane. Pores in the reverse osmosis membrane are so small that only water molecules (H20) pass through. The pores are 75,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. Contaminants are rejected and drained away. The result is removal of 98% of the dissolved contaminants such as minerals, salts, metals, viruses, bacteria and organics that may be present in the water supply.

Once the water has been filtered and purified it is stored in the storage tank until dispensed. The size of the storage tank will depend on how much water will be needed on average at any given time. Generally, the average size of a residential storage tank is 2 or 3 gallons. Before the water is delivered to the faucet it will pass through a post-carbon filter.

Particulate Sediment Filter
This resin bonded 1 micron sediment filter removes particulate matter down to 1 micron.

Reverse Osmosis Filter
This is a .0005 micron Thin Film Composite (TFC) membrane that removes heavy metals, salts, viruses and bacteria. This filter is what makes purified water different from filtered water and mineral water.

Post Carbon Block Filter
A water washed coconut shell 0.5 micron carbon block filter that removes tastes and odors and acts as a skimmer for bacteria and cryptosporidium. It will also remove any organics that exist after the pre-carbon filter.
